The geopolitical dynamics of Southeast Asia are influenced by global tensions that continue to increase, both from an economic, military and diplomatic perspective. Countries in the region, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, are trying to navigate their strategic position among major powers such as the United States, China, and Russia. One of the main factors in this dynamic is the shift in global power. China continues to rise as an economic and military power, creating economic dependency and fear of regional domination. China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) policy, for example, focuses on infrastructure development in Southeast Asia, but also carries the risk of increasing debt for partner countries. On the other hand, the United States is trying to reaffirm its influence in this region through various initiatives, such as the Indo-Pacific Strategy. These steps include strengthening alliances with ASEAN countries, in the hope of balancing China’s influence. Participation in joint military exercises and increased security assistance is one way to achieve this goal. Tensions in the South China Sea also play a significant role in Southeast Asian geopolitics. Overlapping territorial claims between countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines and China create the potential for conflict. Prudence in resolving maritime disputes is important for regional stability. Many countries in Southeast Asia are adopting a diplomatic approach, seeking to create multilateral cooperation for de-escalation. Not to forget, economic factors are also the main driver. The rapid growth of e-commerce and foreign direct investment are tempting countries to liberalize their economies. Trade transactions between Southeast Asian countries and large countries such as Japan and the United States are increasing, providing opportunities and challenges in balancing international relations. Climate change is also an important issue that influences the geopolitics of this region. Flooding, land loss, and potential conflicts over natural resources are encouraging countries to collaborate in facing this challenge. Engagement in multilateral agreements such as the Paris Agreement demonstrates the region’s commitment to sustainable solutions. From a social perspective, the increasing number of young populations in Southeast Asia creates both challenges and opportunities. Popular disobedience, demand for political transparency, and desire to participate in decision-making are increasing. Social media has become a powerful tool in mass mobilization, drawing global attention to local issues. In this context, ASEAN plays a role as an important diplomatic platform. Despite challenges in coordinating between its members, efforts to strengthen economic and political integration remain a priority. The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement reflects the commitment of ASEAN countries to regional economic cooperation. Additionally, the presence of non-state actors such as civil society organizations and multinational companies influences the dynamics. Fast-growing technology companies, for example, are having an impact on the economic and social policies of countries in the region, adding complexity to international relations. Against this background, Southeast Asia remains an arena of global competition, where countries are trying to find a balanced strategic position. Existing tensions present opportunities for diplomacy and cooperation, although challenges remain. The sustainability and stability of the region will depend greatly on the ability of countries to adapt to this geopolitical upheaval.
