Climate change has become a deep global concern, penetrating many aspects of life, including political stability. The impacts of climate change are very complex and can result in estrangement in relations between countries, resource disputes, and mass migration. Rising global temperatures cause ecosystem damage, which has the potential to trigger conflict. Countries that depend on agriculture, such as many countries in Africa and Asia, face existential threats due to crop failures and declining food production. The uncertainty created by extreme weather changes creates tensions between farmers and governments, and drives people to seek better conditions elsewhere. Climate woes also stimulate migration. Ukraine is an example of how conflict is multidimensional: the conflict resulting from military invasion is also fueled by environmental impacts. When communities are forced to move due to natural disasters, this often causes unrest in the destination area. Countries with weak infrastructure or experiencing economic crises risk facing greater challenges to manage increasing migrant flows. In addition, climate change affects the geopolitics of resources. The Arctic region, increasingly exposed due to melting ice, is becoming the focus of aggressive territorial claims by countries such as Russia, the US and Canada. Competition over resources such as oil and gas in the area is exacerbating international tensions, with the potential for conflict becoming increasingly real. Climate change is also shaking up the global economy. Hard-hit countries, especially developing countries, often rely on international aid and financial support to weather disasters. Economic instability as a result of natural disasters can cause public dissatisfaction, which can lead to protests and political unrest. In this context, weak government institutions exacerbate risks to political stability. Governments that are reluctant to acknowledge the impacts of climate change or that lag in mitigation actions may experience a decline in their legitimacy in the eyes of the people. Public dissatisfaction with policies deemed inadequate can trigger extremist ideologies and radicalization. In some countries, rulers who ignore environmental issues risk losing support, potentially leading to political crises. Furthermore, international cooperation in dealing with climate change is an important effort to mitigate conflict. Agreements such as the Paris Agreement offer a platform for countries to come together to face the serious challenges posed by climate change. Ensuring technological innovation and resource transfers can help developing countries adapt, potentially easing tensions and creating greater political stability. However, a more structured and collaborative response to climate change is an important step towards creating a more secure and politically stable future. For policy makers, integrating environmental issues in conflict management and sustainable development strategies is a must. It’s not just about protecting the environment; it’s about maintaining peace and stability throughout the world.
