How to Write a News Update

A news update is an article that recaps or summarizes recent developments related to a topic. This type of news article may be published in a newspaper, magazine or online. It is generally unbiased and provides the facts, leaving the reader to decide their own opinion. Many businesses use a weekly or monthly news update to inform their employees about new projects and initiatives. News updates can also provide recognition for employee accomplishments or special achievements.

A good news update begins with a compelling, interesting anecdote or dramatic fact. This is often called a “lede” and must grab the readers’ attention quickly. It should also explain why the event is newsworthy and how it relates to a larger issue. A news update should also answer the five W’s and an H – who, what, when, where and why.

Once you have a solid lede, write the rest of your news article with key details and quotes from sources who have firsthand knowledge. If possible, avoid cliche phrases and cute words that are no longer original or relevant.

Proofread your news article before submitting it for publication. A good practice is to let another person read your article and make notes. This will help ensure that the article is clear, accurate and concise. Remember to follow AP style (spelling out numbers one through nine, using numerals for all numbers above 10, avoiding the Oxford comma and other similar rules). Finally, double-check the facts, especially when quoting someone else’s opinion or mentioning a specific name or date.
